Standard 2: An education leader promotes the success of every student by advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.
Artifact 2
Professional Learning Communities
Literature Review
Rationale:The selected artifact, "Professional Learning Communities: Cultural Reform and Effectiveness" was created as part of EDU Leadership 600 at UNE. This assignment was a literature review and analysis of effective Professional Learning Communities in schools. Standard 2 requires that an education leader promotes student success by sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth. Professional Learning Communities done right can sustain a culture of collaboration. As stated in the artifact, "Collaborations will change as student data is continuously analyzed. PLC's establish opportunities for trying new instructional practices and analyzing the results. Teachers reflect on their practices by using student work samples during collaborations and assess new strategies to make decisions about what should be done next." This artifact demonstrates Standard 2 as it exemplifies how PLCs ensure that the school has developed common assessments and accountability systems to monitor student progress.

Reflection:Standard 2 requires that education leaders promote a school culture of collaboration and professional growth that will improve student success. At the time I completed this literature review on Professional Learning Communities I was also reorganizing the structure of my own school's PLCs. The creation of this artifact and the process of structuring my school's PLCs helped me develop the instructional and leadership capacity of the staff as everyone took on shared responsibilities of collaboration about common school assessments, discussing student growth and ways to make instruction more rigorous. Understanding the true effectiveness of PLC's will help me establish culture reform that may be needed at any school. I teach at a new school now and after the completion of this assignment and the completing of all my courses at the UNE graduate program, I know how to establish Professional Learning Communities that promote the success of every student through structured collaboration and strategic student data analysis for instructional next steps.
