Teaching in Tanzania, 2007
My first teaching experience was in Tanzania where I taught English, Writing, Reading and Math to Swahili speaking children at an orphanage set deep in the African village of Tengeru. This experience along with my travels aboard on Semester at Sea in '06 has been the root of my desire to teach. Seeing children stripped of their innocence through poverty and a lack of education made me realize that it is my calling to teach and provide children with opportunities to explore their curiosities while building the fundamental blocks to become successful adults. These experiences gave me great insight into a multicultural perspective that I always embrace as I incorporate culturally responsive practices into my interactions with students. This was and always will be the most rewarding and beautiful experience of my life.
