Rationale:Standard 5 of the ISLLC Educational Leadership Policy Standards requires that an education leader promotes the success of every student by acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner. I was voted in as the leader of Lavaland Elementary School's Instructional Council for a two year term. This artifact selected is my PowerPoint agenda for the Instructional Council's End of Year meeting to address the priorities of the next school to ensure a system of accountability for every student's academic and social success. Each grade level chair would bring student data or overall concerns to our monthly meetings and I would have to conduct myself in an ethical manner by giving voice to teachers and setting up systems of voting to safeguard the values of democracy. All of my decision-making on the Instructional Council was grounded in addressing the best needs of the students. This artifact reflects how I gave my intentions of decision-making and sought to increase teacher professional development to improve teacher instruction for our students.

Reflection:During my two year term as the leader of the Instructional Council I learned how this process relates to Standard 5 in terms of the importance of evaluating school systems and making decisions about those systems in joint effort with administration and other teacher leaders through the lens of what's best for our students. The process of democratic decision-making proved to be a challenge since some relationships within the staff may not have been as equitable as I would have preferred. However, it was a powerful and rewarding experience lead my school's teacher leaders while being an advocate for our students. I really enjoyed this leadership role as I worked with the school's administration and instructional coach to make school wide improvements and increase student achievement. Motivating my staff to participate in more professional development and be more mindful about their belief in their students were my main priorities. Not all goals were accomplished, but many positive changes were made.
